Forget the 4th – How about celebrating the 8th?

Well, this is very interesting, and everyone will be amazed. The 8th of July! What is so different about the 8th of July this year?

At five minutes and six seconds after 4 a.m. on the 8th of July, the time and date will be 04:05:06 07/08/09. This will never happen again.

I think we should use this unique day to reflect on our distinctiveness.

Spend the day creating mindfulness of what makes you different. So often people try to emulate other situations, styles and personas. I say STOP! Be your own unique self.

Generation Y in the Workplace

Amazingly, this is the hottest topic in business today. I receive emails everyday asking, “How do I work with Generation Y?” How do you provide leadership and motivation to this new entrant into the workforce? The Millenials, the other moniker for Gen Y, were born between 1977 and 1994 and there are some 70 million in this 14 to 31 age group…roughly 20 percent of the U.S. Population.

Some ideas:

1. Tear up historical job descriptions. I mean really — people aren’t doing what’s written in them, so there is a gap between reality and the written word. Gen Y wants the reality of the job, not some over stated litany of words that is outdated.

Graduation: Why self-awareness, focus, and discipline are the secrets to success

Grandpa Al, Wes, and MarshaOur grandson, Wesley McFall Young aka Wes graduated this weekend from the University of TennesseeKnoxville with honors. When I think about a teenager making the decision to further their life, Wes becomes the poster child for self-awareness, focus, and discipline to maximize success. So here are some thoughts…

1. Self-awareness – What have you decided to “major in” – in other words, have you looked at your strengths and maximized them? Too many people focus on their weaknesses and become “victims of circumstance.” I believe people fall in this trap because it is easier than taking personal responsibility for their actions.

Internal Communications and Personal Responsibility

I continue to be amazed at the people that do not take personal responsibility for their lives. In reading the news this morning, the article titled Police: Texas Toddler may have been crushed by obese relative.

Weight control has always been an issue with me and I know every bite that goes in my mouth is going to show up somewhere on my bod. Toxic Behavior? Perhaps. I also know I am not “obese” and if I was – I would do the best exercise of all, pushing away from the table. Or maybe this one … eat less and exercise more! Here is the question… is it such poor self worth that people cannot control what they put in their pie hole? When you put on an extra 20 – 30 pounds, don’t you notice that your clothes no longer fit properly? Maybe you need to get stuff from Larry Winget!!

Extreme Makeover of Your Ability

Did you watch Extreme Makeover last night? This is a program I rarely watch but I was doing mindless paperwork in my office and thought – what the heck. Well, I’m glad I did.

Patrick Henry HughesPatrick Henry Hughes was born without sight and some real physical issues. He views his “disability” as an “ability” to do certain things better than most people. Patrick Henry has the ability to see people from the inside out, rather than judge them from the outside in.
