Life is Complex. Keep it Simple.

As we mire through the Christmas, Hanukkah and the many celebrations leading us to 2011, remember that life IS complex. Keeping it simple is the real key to success.

The picture is the Blueberry Pie Al (my husband) and I made for Christmas Eve dinner. The blueberries are from Al’s sisters blueberry bush in North Carolina and they must have more frequent flyer miles that most fruit! Note that a very large mouse had a bite of it – and it must have been a BIG mouse because it used a spoon!

Arkansas, personal responsibility and you

The Northwest  Business Women’s Conference is Tuesday, September 17 in Arkansas and they expect an audience of 1300 people.  I am honored to be the opening Keynote but also to be on the platform with Helen Hunt

As a former corporate executive I have learned that uniting with like minded people supports goals, focus and intent.  When I discussed customizing the presentation to the audience the event planner said there would be everyone there from Executives of Fortune 500 companies to stay at home mom’s.  How refreshing and how fun!

My mission in life is to give back more than I’ve received and connect my head and heart with my mouth.  Being a professional speaker and author helps me connect with people that want to take personal responsibility, manage toxic people and communicate more appropriately.

Stop. Think. Learn. Plan. Do.

I’ve learned that fishing is not necessarily a sport of drowning worms. That is why it is important to check the weather report, read the local area fishing information and understand how people are catching fish.

Why is this so much like life? I believe if we did our homework whether shopping for a home, a loan or a phone, we would get much better results. But most people want it now without much consideration. Their amazing fast track will get them where? And is it what they really want?

Happy Turkey Day!

My greeting to you

So you think you are thankful this Thanksgiving? My challenge to you and what I will do: write down everything you are thankful for. Your list should have at least 30 entries. Next time life isn’t going too well, or so you think, pull out the list and read it.  Heck, read it every morning. Focus on what is right vs. what is wrong. Do something that will move you forward in a positive manner.

Happy Thanksgiving-Marsha

Entitlement and Responsibility

As I watch the news relating the stories of the inappropriate actions of Kanye West, Serena Williams, Joe Wilson, Mark Sanford, and the oldie but goody John McEnroe (who thinks Serena’s outburst was OK), I am struck by the lack of personal responsibility and the poor choices they make. And did you pay attention to their reactions? How did we become a me, me, me, society? What happened to conflict resolution skills and personal development? How did we become an entitlement society?

Dump the Non-essentials

Namibia, AfricaI am packing for our trip to Namibia, Africa and I am working to eliminate the non-essentials.  Do you carry around a bunch of junk in your head that clutters your judgment and choices? I think we need to do the same for our brain, thinking and planning.

I know for me, the extra stuff can get in the way of my making the best choices. This personal responsibility will help keep the trash away from our business success.  And think about what the junk does to our communications!

So how about you?  What non-essentials could you leave behind to unclutter your thinking?

Make my day – heck, make YOUR day.

Life Long Learning and YOU

I spoke to a wonderful group of about 300 people from the Food Services Industry yesterday. The topic was Is Your Networking Working? — and includes  face-to-face networking and Social (Internet) networking.  These were high level people and the room was filled.  Here’s what I know.  Successful people never stop learning.

One woman approached me prior to the meeting and said, “Now this isn’t going to be simple networking is it?”  I told her “no” but leave any time if it is not what you are looking for.  She was there the entire session. She took personal responsibility for her learning.

Personal Responsibility for Success and Learning

I am so excited to report that my next book, The Reactor Factor: How to respond positively to negative business situations was sent to the Publisher, John Wiley, this week!  Whew – boy am I happy! The release of the book will be in October this year.  Look for updates later! The book is all about personal responsibility and ending entitlement.

Listening to both sides of everything – The Inauguration

Enjoying the Inaguration

President Obama is to be congratulated for really making history today.  What courage and focus he has shown during his campaign.  Whether you voted for him or not, he is the President of our fine nation.  We must work together to fix the current problems. We must not judge anything and only look at the leadership, communications and problem solving provided by his position.

I met a gentleman this weekend that went to law school with President Obama and he said that Barrack was one of the finest minds he had ever encountered.  And this person didn’t belong to the same party either and was not a political hack.
