An Elevator Speech is a well-prepared series of phrases about yourself and your company that becomes a natural part of your conversation. This is something we do all the time, only we’re not aware of it when we answer the question “What do you do?”
For the unprepared, this awkward moment can be a lost opportunity to gain new customers, grow your business or to learn something that can benefit their success. Brief encounters can become big wins. Your polished approach can either get your noticed and possibly hired, or not.
Practice Pays Off – To prepare this powerful verbal tool, write down a list of everything you would like someone to know about you and your business. Then write the benefit for the person you are speaking to, not just the features. Remember the old acronym: WIIFM – What’s In It For Me! Everyone has their own radio station and if we want our Elevator Speech to be heard, we need to bring the listener into the equation. Where is the value for them? Making their life easier, more balanced, more in control, tools to succeed, be happier, or whatever – you turn what you do into a benefit for them!
Practice saying the phrases you are most comfortable with in a conversational tone, out loud. Even better, record yourself! It is important to verbalize these thoughts—just thinking them is not enough. And it doesn’t matter where you practice—only that you do. When your mouth speaks the words, you will get powerful results. You begin to say and hear these positive reflections about yourself and your business—and you begin to believe. Remember – what the mind believes the mind perceives.
Your confidence grows, and your business will, too.
